Black Beauty Anthurium (Anthurium 'Black Beauty')

Black Beauty Anthurium (Anthurium 'Black Beauty') is a striking tropical plant admired for its deep, velvety blooms and glossy green foliage. Native to the tropical Americas, this rare and elegant variety brings an air of sophistication to any indoor space. Its bold, dark flowers and lush leaves make it a stunning choice for collectors and plant enthusiasts looking to add a touch of drama to their displays.

Distinctive Features

Black Beauty Anthurium produces heart-shaped spathes in rich, dark burgundy to nearly black tones, each surrounding a contrasting spadix. These long-lasting blooms rise above glossy, deep green foliage that provides the perfect backdrop for the dramatic flowers. The combination of velvety dark blooms and vibrant green leaves creates a captivating contrast that sets this variety apart from other Anthuriums.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun Exposure: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and diminish flower color.
  • Soil: Thrives in a well-draining, organic-rich potting mix that retains moisture without becoming soggy.
  • Water: Requires moderate watering. Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings to prevent root rot.
  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity and benefits from misting or placement near a humidifier in dry indoor conditions.
  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 10 to 12 (grow as a houseplant in cooler climates).

Ideal Uses

  • Indoor Decor: Adds a bold, elegant focal point to living rooms, offices, or conservatories with its dramatic blooms and glossy foliage.
  • Terrariums: Thrives in humid, enclosed environments with ample indirect light, adding a touch of luxury to glass displays.
  • Patio Planting: Enhances shaded patios or balconies with its unique color and tropical presence in warm climates.
  • Focal Point: Serves as a dramatic centerpiece in tropical-themed plant arrangements.

Low Maintenance Care

Black Beauty Anthurium is relatively easy to care for, requiring only consistent moisture, high humidity, and bright filtered light to thrive. Its long-lasting flowers and resilient nature make it ideal for gardeners of all experience levels.

  • Watering: Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Avoid waterlogging, which can cause root rot.
  • Pruning: Remove spent flowers and yellowing leaves to encourage continuous growth and maintain a tidy appearance.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, water-soluble houseplant fertilizer every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season to support vibrant blooms and foliage.
  • Winter Care: Reduce watering in cooler months and maintain warm, humid conditions indoors.

Why Choose Black Beauty Anthurium?

Black Beauty Anthurium offers a rare combination of dramatic flowers, glossy foliage, and easy-care requirements, making it a standout plant for collectors and tropical plant enthusiasts alike.

  • Dramatic Blooms: Deep, velvety spathes add mystery, elegance, and rich color to any display.
  • Decorative Appeal: Creates a bold and sophisticated focal point in indoor spaces.
  • Low Maintenance: Thrives with minimal attention once its basic needs are met.
  • Unique Variety: A rare and striking Anthurium cultivar ideal for plant collectors.

Find Out Who Was the Legal Secretary
Format: Hardcover
I ordered this book after watching Nuremberg with Michael Shannon and Russell Crowe because I wanted to find out who was the woman accompanying Justice Jackson to Germany. Yes, that was not his wife, it was his legal secretary, Elsie Douglas. This book is the only source I could find that goes into any detail about their relationship. What it provides is nowhere near salacious, because it is evident that Jackson took his secrets to the grave. What details it does provide about the evident love triangle that existed in Jackson's life for many years is quite sufficient to explain the events of Nuremberg.

Well written. Factual sloppiness.
Format: Hardcover
Good insight into Jackson’s approach to the law. Thoroughly researched. Well written. However, Professor White made two egregious factual errors, both of which are an indication of sloppiness on his part, as well as that of his editors and peer reviewers. First, he refers to the World War 2 Chief of Naval Operations as the Secretary of the Navy. Second he states that Los Alamos National Laboratory is in California.

Judging Jackson
Format: Hardcover
Readers interested in FDR's era, the post-war Nuremberg Trial, and/or such important U.S. Supreme Court events as the Rosenberg spy case and Brown v. Board of Education will enjoy this well-researched book. Illuminating insights as to the characters of his fellow members of the High Court, especially Justices Black and Douglas, are also present. Of special interest in today's world is Justice Jackson's thinking on the limits of Executive Power in terms of war powers and foreign relations. I do think non-lawyers will be less interested when the author, a legal scholar, sometime goes into depth exploring aspects of Justice Jackson's thoughts on opaque technical areas, such as diversity jurisdiction under the constitution. And, I fail to see the need to spend much time on Justice Black's two children, as is done in chapter two "Family Matters." Why do I need to know that his daughter was a mediocre student in college or details about her early love life? Professor White clearly admires Robert H. Jackson as a fine advocate, brilliant writer, and independent judge, while noting some of his flaws. All in all, a good biography of an important American.
